Human Rights Day, observed annually on 10th December, was established by the UN General Assembly to celebrate the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was proclaimed on 10th December 1948. The day aims to create awareness for the importance of this powerful tool.
At our seminar, Education – A Human Right under Threat we highlighted education as a human right, and critically examined how major challenges, such as climate change, jeopardise the fulfilment of this right for all, drawing on recent insights from COP29.
The event featured key speakers, including a youth advocate as well as legal and education specialists, with contributions from the Right to Education Initiative, Plan International Ireland, Education Cannot Wait, and Education International. Our distinguished speakers examined education as a human right, its guarantees and responsibilities of states and other stakeholders, and explored the threats climate change poses to education sharing insights from COP29.
