We’re delighted to announce an exciting development in our Free Education Worldwide Campaign:

Plan International Ireland’s Youth Advisory Panel has shared a statement supporting our campaign urging the government to support the initiative currently underway at the UN for a new optional protocol to the Child Rights Convention to guarantee free pre-primary and secondary education and to recognise that the right to education includes early childhood care and education.

The Youth Advisory Panel wrote to the Ministers of the Departments for Foreign Affairs, International Development, Children and Youth, and Education as well as to the Ombudsman for Children.

We’ve been honoured to engage with our member Plan International Ireland and its Youth Advisory Panel over the past few days.

Their statement says it all: Ireland must join the more than 50 countries – with many from the EU and the Global South – supporting the new optional protocol as access to free education is important to young people.

This will be the first treaty written with the input of children and young people — and it is so great to see Irish youth advocates joining the over 8,000 young people worldwide rallying behind this vital initiative.
